AC showing Wizard of Oz tonight, 7pm – 9th Av farmers market parking lot

17 02 2012

This is a bit last minute, but if you get this in time – great!

Tonight at 7pm, Anywhere Cinema is screening the Wizard of Oz in the Farmers Market Parking Lot on 9th Avenue. We’re still figuring out logistics but we’re reasonably confident it’ll happen. Come join us!

This screening is part of the first ever Inner Sunset Art Crawl, taking place tonight 6-10pm. Discover local art by local artists and mingle at local businesses. Local, eh?

Full information on the Art Crawl here.

Thanks for the ride (so far)!

12 12 2011

2011 is closing up and so is Anywhere Cinema Season 2. So, we’re taking a break for a while to relax, celebrate this great experience so far, and to mull over what might come next from our wonderful movie kit.

As much as we had a great time in 2011, we feel like we’ve only scratched the surface of Anywhere Cinema’s potential, both in terms of doing interesting things with the equipment and in terms of using it to build community. So, join us next year to see what happens. We’re always looking for new enthusiastic folks to help with events and steward the idea so contact us if you’d like to get involved.

This is community equipment, so if you are putting on any kind of event that’s open to the public, you are welcome and encouraged to borrow the AC kit. Get in touch if you’d like to.

Thank you to everybody who supported us in Anywhere Cinema’s first year – some of you donated money to fund the equipment, helped generate ideas and set up at events, and/or showed up to join in. We’re grateful to you all and hope you enjoyed the events as much as we did. For a complete rundown of everything that happened this year, visit the AC Events page.

See you in 2012!  — The Anywhere Cinema team

Update: Next AC event to feature student short “A Hard Rock Night” & live music

5 12 2011

We have a cool short film to play before our main feature at the upcoming Anywhere Cinema event. SCREAM (Sunset Creators Reaching Every Able Mind) Youth Media Workshop will show their fall film “A Hard Rock Life.”

SCREAM offers high school students the opportunity and resources to learn and work on film, video and multimedia productions. The workshop is based at the Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center.

And “Of Nada”, a local San Francisco youth music ensemble, will also be performing some rock, jazz, and holiday music. Right on!

Next Event: “Scrooged”, Saturday December 10th @ Everybody Bikes

23 11 2011

The final Anywhere Cinema event of the year will go out with style – holiday style. We’ll be showing the classic comedy “Scrooged”, starring Bill Murray. Whether you’re a holiday movie fan or cynic, this one should float your boat. It’s fun, witty, and hits you over the head with numerous surprises.

This event takes place at Everybody Bikes (1352 Irving St) and starts at 6pm with a potluck, so bring a dish for that. The movie starts at 8pm. Oh, and bring as many pillows/cushions as you can. We’ll be creating a slumber party-esque vibe – probably without too many chairs. It’ll be fun.

Check out the event page for the full details and we’ll see you there.

Mad Hats at the Tea Party

17 11 2011

Our Anywhere Cinema pre-movie potlucks are almost as much fun as the films themselves. For the potluck at the November 12th event (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”) at Urban Bazaar, we gathered around a long low table that made us feel like adults as a children’s tea party. When attendee John put on a wacky colorful clown-ish hat, somebody remarked “This feels like the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party!” It was a curious but fitting observation.

Continuing our run of enjoying events too much to take photos, we don’t have any real pics from the event. So let the above picture spark your imagination enough to join us at the December 10th event at Everybody Bikes for the potluck before settling down for the classic “Scrooged”.

The AC screen stands proud

2 11 2011

Here’s a photo from N Judah Chronicles of the Anywhere Cinema screen in action on Irving Street at the end of this year’s Inner Sunset Street Fair (10/16). The screen is 9ft wide and 6.75ft tall. We bought most of the materials at the excellent projection screen specialist Carl’s Place.

Anywhere Cinema makes history at the Inner Sunset Street Fair 10/16

12 10 2011

Every community should know its history. That’s why this Sunday October 16th at 6:30pm, Anywhere Cinema is proud to host a special historical presentation by Woody LaBounty from the Western Neighborhoods Project. Woody will explain more about history related to the western part of San Francisco (with a focus on the Inner Sunset), using photos and video and his own wit.

This special event will represent the final portion of the Inner Sunset Street Fair, which runs all day on October 16th, from 10am-5pm. The presentation will take place on Irving Street between 9th and 10th Avenue. As far as we know, this is the only time sometime audiovisual like this has even been done on this street, so don’t miss it!
